- Tenure-Track Positions in Environmental Engineering
The Duke University Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering seeks candidates for two tenure-track positions in Environmental Engineering at any level. One of these positions is targeted to individuals with well-established expertise in environmental biotechnology. We are particularly interested in candidates with a specialization in emerging areas such as bio-energy, and convergent technologies such as nano-biotechnologies. For both positions, we encourage candidates to apply with expertise related to environmentally benign energy production, environmental applications and life cycle impacts of advanced materials, or environmental technologies adapted to sustainability in rapidly growing urban areas. Applicants should have a vision of collaboration and relevance for their research and teaching that is international and cross-disciplinary. Applications from women and under-represented minority groups are strongly encouraged.
Interested applicants should provide a detailed curriculum vitae, statements of research and teaching interests, and a list of three references (with telephone numbers and email addresses). Applicants should have a doctoral degree in environmental engineering or a related field. Application materials must be submitted electronically via our online upload form. Review of applications will begin immediately, but applications will be accepted until the positions are filled.
Duke's Pratt School of Engineering is undergoing a significant period of growth, increasing faculty by approximately 50%, more than doubling research and teaching space and doubling research expenditures over the last 6 years. Duke University is an Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Employer.
- Research and Development Engineer I
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the Edmund T. Pratt Jr. School of Engineering is accepting applications for a full-time research and development engineer who will be responsible for oversight of our teaching and research laboratories.
The position requires an undergraduate degree in engineering, engineering technology, or physical sciences with laboratory and/or testing experience preferred. We are seeking self-motivated team players able to learn and work independently and to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students.
Job responsibilities will be to perform a variety of technical duties involved in conducting undergraduate laboratory experiments and assisting faculty in setting-up experiments. Specific duties will involve maintenance and operation of testing equipment for undergraduate labs, oversight of organizational and safety-related matters for these laboratory spaces, and contribution to the planning, design, construction, and modification of experimental hardware for teaching and research labs.
For undergraduate labs, the research and development engineer will set-up and conduct experiments for courses in Solid Mechanics, Dynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Soil Mechanics, Concrete Design and Steel Design. These labs include experiments such as tensile and torsional testing of metals, buckling, triaxial soil testing, compaction, concrete cylinder and beam testing, welding, wind tunnel measurements of lift and drag, measurement of conductive and convective heat transfer, measurement of dynamic systems, etc.
Many of these labs involve computer-controlled testing machines and digital data acquisition. Routine maintenance of this equipment is an important job responsibility.
The research and development engineer will ensure compliance with safety requirements applicable to operation of the labs.
Interested applicants should send their resume to Dr. David Schaad, Assistant Chair, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Box 90287, Duke University, Durham, North Carolina 27708-0287 or by e-mail to: david.schaad@duke.edu. Duke is an equal opportunity employer.
