Civil and Environmental Engineering at Duke

studentgroups.

Both Duke University and the Pratt School of Engineering sponsor a range of student groups. Listed below are those that are thought to be of particular interest to civil and environmental engineering students. Please explore the Pratt student group site as well to find other groups with interests similar to yours.

  • Duke Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) - Visit website to see photos of projects and attend events.
  • Engineers Without Borders (EWB) - EWB-Duke members will work towards becoming internationally responsible citizens as they apply appropriate engineering design and analysis as members of interdisciplinary teams.
  • Duke SmartHouse - The Duke SmartHouse is a 6,000 sq. ft. live in research laboratory operated by Duke's Pratt School of Engineering. We are partnering with industry to strengthen the residential market for integrated technology, and helping homeowners to make their own ideas for smart homes a reality.
  • The Alive@Pratt Project:   this project seeks to educate building occupants about the mechanical systems that the building relies on for efficient operation; to involve the community with real-time building performance feedback and interactive control of the building; to support research opportunities for faculty and students; to publish student and faculty work related to building performance and control systems; to recruit students and faculty with academic opportunities; and to promote the use of existing technologies on campus for classes and research.
  • Duke Environmental Alliance: this is a group of students, staff and faculty at Duke who are working to increase awareness of environmental sensitive lifestyle and who are involved in a range of contests and outreach projects. Examples include the Eco-Olympics, Earth Day, Green Power Purchasing, recycling, socially responsible investing and many more activities.

With each of these groups, students have the opportunity to work in group environments solving challenging, applied problems facing a variety of ways.
